Ethics, risk management and law firm management issues via a hotline when you need it!
PCIA assists its clients in obtaining guidance on law practice issues before problems arise. Although some insurance companies have attempted to establish hotlines for insureds, these services have not been widely used because insurance company lawyers may staff them, and because as national hotlines they do not always provide local expertise.
PCIA has recently made arrangements for its clients to obtain such services from a Michigan lawyer recognized in the field. Marcia Proctor, principal in Proctor Legal Consulting PLLC, has over 25 years experience in the professional responsibility field. She has served as Director of the American Bar Association’s Center for Professional Responsibility, as General Counsel for the State Bar of Michigan, and as General Counsel for the Detroit law firm Butzel Long. She authored a monthly column in the Michigan Bar Journal from 1989 to 1997, and her articles regularly appear in Michigan Lawyers Weekly.
How does the service work? For a minimal fixed annual fee, lawyers in law firms insured through PCIA may call Proctor Legal Consulting PLLC and discuss with Ms. Proctor those ethics, risk management and law firm management questions the lawyers may be facing. Inquiries should be posed as hypotheticals, without identifying any participants by name, and lawyers may also call anonymously. An account password is assigned to verify that the caller is eligible for the service. Callers should use their own discretion is deciding whether to leave return-call messages. No client-attorney relationship arises from the consultation, although inquiries will be kept confidential. Unlike other services, PCIA will not know when law firms use the service or the nature of the questions asked.
