Snow-capped houses are a very charming sight, but do not be one of the homeowners who are fooled by their beauty. A snow-capped house could result in damages and a repair bill. Is your Michigan home insurance in place?

Snow can weigh a great deal. It becomes even heavier as rain, ice and sleet are added to the mix. Two feet of snow on an average sized roof can be the equivalent of 38,000 pounds. All of this weight puts stress on your roof and can weaken the structure. 

While making matters worse, when the snow melts it can cause water seepage. Excess water can rot roofs, destroy installation, flood attics, and damage gutters or even the interior of your home.

Before you attempt to remove the snow from your roof, please note that it can be very dangerous. The weight of one person may be enough to trigger a collapse.  You could also take a wrong step and slide down the roof.

Depending on your policy, you may or may not have coverage for snow damage and everything that comes with it. Are you aware of the exclusions, conditions and limits on your existing Michigan home insurance policy? Now could be the time to check.
